RATS/RODENTS
If only life was as simple as 'hickory dickory dock'.. but its actually safe to say that its a 50/50 outcome that occurs when actually spotting a rat or rodent in the flesh;
[1] the critter just got there/ learning its way around/passing through
[2] you found a roommate you didn't know moved in.
You will more than likely find the environment rats & rodents make for themselves before actually seeing the critter. Rats for example, have 2 species: roof rats and Norway rats. With physical appearance differences, roof rats actually live up to their name and live among higher dwellings such as in between walls, cabinets, attics, etc. Norway rats typically live in warmer climates that are coastal embraced and they do not like each other. but where you find a roof rat, a Norway rat may not be far.
differences to remember between rats & mice and things to know/check for infestation
- they both gnaw on wood. rats teeth markings will be particularly larger
- rats droppings will be around pet dishes
- holes & feedings on rotting or hanging fruit/nuts in garden
- nests in fireplace, and/or behind stored logs
- both species of rats will gather food to feed elsewhere
- rats have been known to squeeze through 1/2 inch gaps
Like any other problem, an infestation wont go away unless taken care of.
Cleanliness is next to godliness, so sanitation pertaining to ANY pest, especially rats is key. Not maintaining or having an infestation controlled will be a catalyst of having thoroughly extensive damage to the infrastructure to your house, you will have to continuously be checking on/repurchasing your own foodstuffs/pet food/ living space due to rodent contamination.
